Smudging- a ritual to cleans and purify.

Many of us appreciate the benefits of a soothing bath or vigorous shower to cleanse and refresh our body. Equally as effective but on the psychic energetic level is the practice of 'smudging'.

'Smudging' is the common name given to the Sacred Smoke Bowl Blessing, a powerful cleansing technique from the Native American tradition. However the buring of of herbs for emotional, psychic and spiritual purification is common practice in many religious healing and spiritual traditions.

It is a ritual way to cleanse a person, place or an objects, negative energies or influences. The theory behind smudging is that the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as it clears it takes the negative energy with it, leaving your space recharged and clear.

How to Smudge

Any action, undertaken with intention and belief can become a potent ritual so consider your intention before you smudge and hold it clearly in your mind. You may wish to invite the Nature Spirit to assist and guide you with your intentions. A candle lit with the same intent is a good light for your Smudge stick. Once there is a flame, blow it out so that the Smudge Stick is smoldering, not burning. Blow on the stick or wave around with your had to put the flame out. Allow the smudge stick to smolder, freeing the smoke to circle in the air.

Smudging YourSelf

Fan the swirls of smoke around your body from head to toe. You may wish to focus where you feel there are blockages or where there is physical, emotional or psychic pain. Imagine the smoke lifting away all your negitive thoughts, emotions and energies that have attached themselves to you. Watch them fade and be taken away in the smoke.

Smudging a Room or Space

Walk around the perimeter, giving special attentions to the corners, behind dawn, inside cupboards and draws. Using a large feather can help.

Cleansing Crystals or Other Objects

Hold the objects to be purified in the smoke by holding them over the sick. If you are clearing your Crystals prior to programming them, use the smudge stick and the Crystal to help you realize your goals.

Extinguishing the Smudge Stick

Have a ready fire proof receptacle such as a glass or ceramic dish to put the smudge stick in when you have finished. And is ideal, or earth to suffocate the cinders. Always make sure your Smudge Stick is out before leaving the room where you keep it.
